scope:
- The devices covered by this specification shall provide one-way communication from an aircraft in flight to a submerged submarine or simulate an ASW weapon launch. The secondary functions are to provide an active acoustic reference, and to assist in determining misdistance from submarine in simulated weapon drops. The devices have four or more manually selectable acoustic codes in the audible frequency range. The devices are electromechanical, continuous wave, frequency shift coded, expendables. The device will be referred to as the "signal" in this specification.
- The signal shall be of the following types:
Type Description (See Figure 12) MK 84 MOD 0 Four codes (1 through 4) MK 84 MOD 1 Five codes (1 through 5) Operationally rain and spray tight. MK 84 MOD 2 Five codes (1 through 5) Operationally rain and spray tight. 14" suspension provision.
- The signal shall be capable of detection and code identification with submarine sonars (in the signal's frequency ranges), underwater telephone AN/UQC, and sonobuoys in the AN/SSQ-41 and 57 series. The signal shall be capable of being launched from bomb rack or shackle adapters such as the ADU-369/A; from bomb racks or shackles with 14" suspension (MOD 2 signal only); from sonobuoy launcher-containers (SLC) capable of using a split liner (sabot); and manually through aircraft free-fall chutes.
