INTRODUCTION
The development of turbine oils with improved properties has been under way for many years. Along with this development there have been established test methods to evaluate the various characteristics of the turbine oils. These test methods, in general, assure the ultimate user of obtaining a satisfactory oil, but they alone do not guarantee satisfactory service performance.
Experience has indicated that system design, operating conditions and practices, as well as oil quality, are closely interwoven. Each contributes a part of the performance requirement specified.
In an effort to improve the design of marine turbine lubricating systems, representatives of the equipment builders, ship designers and builders, ship classification and government agencies and oil suppliers have developed the following recommended practices. These recommendations are considered to be the minimum requirements and are offered as a guide for the marine industry.
Subsequent to the issue of these recommendations, it is planned to issue recommendations on oil handling and purification, flushing and cleaning, and recommendations on the design of lubrication systems for ship service turbo/generators as they affect the main system.
