These standards have been developed to obtain interchangeability of different makes of air cylinders on the spindles of machine tools without changing the adapter or draw rod.

Three sizes of standard adapters cover the range of standard air cylinders from 3 inches to 18 inches inclusive. Adapter "A" fits the 3-inch and 4½ inch cylinders, adapter "B" fits the 6-inch and 8-inch cylinders, and adapter "C" fits all sizes of cylinders from 10-inch to 18-inch inclusive. A fourth size, adapter "D", is also included and is provided to accommodate the 20-inch air cylinder or other power-operated device having a draw rod pull of 26,000 to 40,000 pounds.

The length of stroke of the standard cylinders, the position of the piston rod at the end of the stroke, the diameter of the piston rod, and the size of the tapped hole in the piston rod have also been standardized so that air cylinder draw rods do not have to be fitted to individual air cylinders.

In order to allow the use of air cylinders on spindles with comparatively small holes, the diameters of the piston rods are as small as is consistent with the requisite strength.

In order to make it easy to compute the lengths of draw rods, the end of the piston rod projects 1 inch beyond the face of the hub on all sizes of air cylinders when the piston is at one end of its stroke and projects 1 inch plus the length of the stroke when the piston is at the other end of the stroke.

The standard adapters are made with hubs large enough to take care of the majority of cases. The dimensions of the standard adapters allow the purchaser to determine whether he can bore and thread the standard adapter to fit the machine on which he wishes to install the cylinder. If the dimensions are not satisfactory, he can order special adapters or make his own adapter to fit the standard cylinder.

Air cylinders 10 inches and larger are frequently used on machines having spindles too large to take the standard adapters. All standard air cylinders 10 inches and larger are made with large diameter hubs so that an additional row of holes may be drilled and tapped on a circle having a radius "N" Table 3 to take care of large-diameter spindles. These additional holes, however, will not be drilled and tapped by the air cylinder manufacturer unless so ordered by the customer but the cylinder will be made so that the customer may drill and tap them at any time, even though the cylinders are not ordered tapped in this manner.

The piston rods and adapters of this standard have been designed to withstand stress resulting from air pressures up to 100 lb per sq in. It is intended, however, that these pistons and adapters may be applied to hydraulic cylinders or to other mechanical operating devices which do not develop working stresses in excess of those developed by the corresponding sizes of air cylinders.
