Organization: SAE
Publication Date: 1 September 2003
Status: inactive
Page Count: 6
scope:

This SAE Aerospace Information Report (AIR) is intended to document and provide access to information obtained by an industry survey.

Purpose:

The purpose of this information report is to summarize and document data regarding possible alternatives to the use of cadmium plating on connectors and connector backshells typically used in the aerospace industry.

Introduction:

Due to the unique properties of cadmium, there does not appear to be a substitute finish material that provides the same advantages and corrosion protection. However, a number of alternative surface treatments and materials are available. Each has its own merits as compared to cadmium.

The data found in the "Test Summary Tables" (located at http://forums.sae.org/access/dispatch.cgi/TEAAE8_pf/folderFrame/100090/0/def/adea) are intended as a guide, and do not necessarily include all possible materials, finishes or conditions. Each material/finish is compared to the performance requirements of cadmium according to the tests described in the "Test Requirements/Sequence" table.
