Changes to the Scope Throughout the User's Manual, significant changes incorporated into the 2013 edition of the Standard are indicated by a n the sections. Section 2 (Scope) was modified to allow for the inclusion of new equipment or building systems that are part of industrial or manufacturing processes.

Purpose Overview ANSI/ASHRAE/IES Standard 90.1 provides minimum requirements for the energy-efficient design of buildings and building systems. It applies to all buildings except low-rise residential buildings (low-rise means three habitable floors or less). The Standard is written in building code language and is intended for adoption by national, state/province, and local code jurisdictions. The Standard specifies reasonable design practices and technologies that minimize energy consumption while providing comfortable and productive environments for the building occupants.
