This standard includes mechanisms that allow a digital video source (such as a cable or terrestrial set-top box, digital VCR, or DVD) to supply displayable, baseband, digital video to HDTV Monitors and EDTV Monitors (DTV Monitors), as defined in the CEA Expanded Definitions for Digital Television Products [I 31. The timing requirements for video formats are described along with requirements for video format discovery. Also, a mechanism allowing the source device to discover the preferred format of a DTV Monitor is described. Four basic DTV formats are defined in this document. Two are considered high definition formats (1 920x1 080i, 128Ox72Op), one is considered enhanced definition (72Ox48Op), and one is considered standard definition (720X480i).
