By explaining the basic principles, Part 2 of VDI/ VDE 3699 aims at providing a basis for the understanding and accurate application of the other parts of this series of standards. The facts given here serve to check compliance with the specifications given in VDI/VDE 3699 Part 3 through Part 6.

The series of standards VDI/VDE 3699 is applicable to process control using display screens in plants of chemical and petrochemical process engineering, steam generation plants, and process engineering plants in metallurgy, provided that no special regulations are to be observed in these plants or plant sections, as is the case e.g. in nuclear- powered plants.

This standard is applicable in the context of the other parts of this series of standards. This standard can be used for the development of a style guide.
