Objective and scope

This guideline deals with the testing of pitch and runout on cylindrical gears, wormwheels and bevel gears. A brief description of the measurement principles gives the user an overview of the methods of pitch and runout testing. The specifications and recommendations provided are meant to ensure that, taking into account the current standards, harmonised criteria are also available for the performance of the measurement. The specifications allow the users to compare their measurement results among one another, or with those stated by the equipment manufacturers. Considering the stricter quality requirements, the inspection of the test equipment for gear measurements (measurement uncertainty budget, traceability) is dealt with in greater detail than before. To this end, the metrological requirements to be met by measuring instruments for pitch and runout tests in order to assure product quality are listed in tables.

As the guideline VDI/VDE 2607 deals with the computer- aided evaluation of gear measurements for profile and helix only, this guideline also includes the methods for evaluation of pitch and runout measurements.
