Scope and objective

The guideline VDI/VDE 3850 Part 3 applies to the touchscreen-specific design of dialogues for electronically controlled machines2) in industrial use. The design recommendations given in this guideline focus on touchscreen use with the finger. A touchscreen- based user interface designed for interaction by means of the finger will mostly also be suitable for use with other contact elements such as a stylus. Where using a stylus requires special design efforts, this will be mentioned in the pertinent clauses.

This Part 3 of the guideline VDI/VDE 3850 is intended to give rules and recommendations with respect to the design of stationary touchscreens. The recommendations given here include fundamental rules for design (such as the size and labelling of objects), information on the use of dialogue techniques, and examples of touchscreen display designs. Mobile touchscreen-based systems (like, e.g., in handheld computers, or in traffic control and cockpit technology) will, to some extent, differ in their design requirements, and will not be dealt with in this guideline.
