scope:
This standard provides an overview of the state of the art in controlling emissions from thermal waste treatment activities (combustion, gasification, pyrolysis) along with information on the construction and operation of waste incineration plants in particular. The basic idea underlying the standards committees is to maintain an intensive experience exchange between plant operators, manufacturers, engineering consultants and authorities so as to ensure that plants are built and operated in accordance with the state of the art and in compliance with the environmental regulations, while at the same time considering cost-benefit aspects.
A very broad spectrum of wastes is subjected to thermal treatment, the thermal process itself typically representing only one part of a complex waste treatment system. For this reason, this standard represents one part of a series of standards ranging from waste collection (VDI 2160) through to waste landfilling (VDI 3860) and covering diverse recovery and disposal options.
