scope:
This standard is intended as a guide to the effective use of the available means for determining and assessing odour intensity and hedonic odour tone in the field. It provides advice on applications and examples of the methods presented in standards VDI 3940 Part 3 and Part 4 and is closely associated with standards VDI 3940 Part 1 and Part 2.
The methods described in standards VDI 3940 Part 3 and Part 4 can be used for
- demonstrating the effectiveness of odour reduction measures,
- setting priorities in terms of measures to be taken in the event of different odour qualities,
- permitting an assessment of the odour impact on the basis of the intensity and/or of the hedonic odour tone in the event of deviations of exposure limits in connection with assessments in individual cases according to No. 5 of GIRL (German Guideline on Odour in Ambient Air).
The preconditions and scopes already cited in standards VDI 3940 Part 1 to Part 4 also apply for this standard.
