scope:
This guideline describes procedures and test equipment for periodic interim checks performed on CMMs in use. These interim check procedures are suitable as the basis for a company's in-house interim checks of CMMs, and also for interim checks of CMMs required by public or private customers. They also specifically meet the requirements of DIN EN ISO 10360-2 and -5. The requirements to be met by the test equipment (artefacts) used for interim checks are specified, and various examples of artefacts are described. For the purpose of this guideline, artefacts are one-, two- and three-dimensional arrangements of features to be probed. Examples of features to be probed include planes, cylinders and spheres. The positions of the features must be known from calibration, and must be documented. With some restrictions, even CMMs with large measuring volumes can be checked using artefacts (see VDI/ VDE 2617 Part 2.3).
Checking of CMMs within the scope of this guideline differs from checking the length measurement error as per Part 2.1 of this series of guidelines in terms of the scope of measurements, the test equipment to be used and the evaluation of the results. The limit values for the characteristics to be checked are specified by the CMM user and may differ from the manufacturer's specifications, e.g. concerning the length measurement error.
