Objective and scope
This guideline applies to optical waveguides based on polymer optical fibres (POF). This guideline aims at specifying harmonised test methods for the determination of optical, transfer, mechanical, ageing, and environmental POF characteristics. Particular consideration is given to the use of POFs in motor vehicles and industrial data communication.
The guideline VDI/VDE 5570 comprises the following parts:
Part 1 Terms and definitions
Part 2 Testing of optical characteristics
Part 3 Testing of mechanical and environmental characteristics
Part 4 Power budget
Part 5 Transfer characteristics (to be published)
The guideline is intended to aid quality improvements, ensure the capability to perform measurements and tests, and enhance the comparability of measurement and test results. It is supposed to facilitate and improve the understanding between manufacturers, suppliers, and users regarding the use of polymer optical fibres (POFs).
To this end, the essential parameters of a test are identified, and suitable values for specific applications are given, where possible. Furthermore, instructions are given in individual cases on how to demonstrate the capability of a test system, on systematic error analysis, and on the determination of test limits.
Specifications are just as detailed as is needed for this purpose.
