Field of application and scope
VDI/VDE 35 1 1 "Temperature Measurement in Industry" contains Information for expedient Performance of temperature measurements and reveals the main aspects for the assessment of measuring uncertainties. Basic knowledge of temperature measurement is assumed. Descriptions of equipment and circuitry are dealt with therefore only to the extent necessary for understanding the Guideline. Measuring equipment shall be selected for the measurements concemed in accordance with the measuring conditions and the error limits required.
In general, a smaller measuring uncertainty is required for acceptance tests than for industrial meas¬ urements, where often greater importance is placed on reliability and rugged construction of the measuring device.
In the case of temperature measuring equipment which has been calibrated or tested by an official calibration Station (traceability to statutory temperature scales), it shall be ensured that the values obtained during adjustment or calibration are still applicable when the measuring equipment is used (measuring stability).
Table 1 provides an overview of the commonest tem¬ perature measuring Instruments along with special temperature measuring systems.
Clause 2 contains principal considerations regarding temperature measurement, particularly concerning the standardization of temperature measuring equipment on the international temperature scale. Clauses 3 and 4 examine the aspects of the thermometer as a foreign body in the temperature field as well as measuring error, measuring uncertainty and error limits. Clause 5 contains an overview of special temperature measuring methods.
The defmitions used in this Guideline correspond to the definitions in DIN 16160 and DIN 1390.
