Scope of the guideline
Part 3 of guideline VDI/VDE 3685 defines and classifies terms and performance parameters of tuning systems. Tuning systems could be designed as independent or integrated products. With this part of the guideline, manufacturers of such systems are given the possibility to evaluate their tuning tools.
The users of such systems can thus compare different systems and select the one which suits them best. The terms employed are largely based on Part 1. In Part 4, a typical tuning system is described as an example.
In a separate guideline VDI/VDE 3686, definitions are given of system-independent function modules for installation in Decentralised Control Systems (DCS) or Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) as specified in guideline VDI/VDE 3696. They provide an interface between the DCS or PLC and the tuning system and can also be used for other purposes such as the implementation of adaptive controllers, complex closed loop concepts or other process control tasks.
