This standard applies to plants and facilities processing raw wood, and the associated ancillary systems.

Raw wood processing operations covered comprise machining and chipless cutting, forming, gluing, drying as well as treatment for preventive wood preservation and wood modification (e.g. thermal and chemical modification, impregnation, hydrophobisation, ammonia treatment.

Further processes and operations involved in wood processing (e.g. production of wood-based panels, enhancement of wood and wood-based panels by veneering, foiling and coating, combustion of wood and wood-based panels with and without halogenated organics and heavy metals-containing wood preservatives) are described in standards VDI 3462 Part 2 to Part 5. Emission measurement instructions are given in VDI 3462 Part 6.
