This standard applies to plants for the production of aluminium by electrolytic reduction of alumina including the associated ancillary operations (e.g. anode rodding shop).

Søderberg cells and cells with prebaked continuous anodes are not described in this standard.

The downstream operations of the electrolytic aluminium reduction process (e.g. temperature holding, melting, refining, alloying, casting) are covered by standard VDI 2286 Part 2. It deals with aluminium melting plants for primary and secondary aluminium production.

The production of the carbon electrodes required for the electrolytic aluminium reduction process is covered by standard VDI 3467.
