VDI 2286 BLATT 2

Emission control - Aluminium smelting plants

active, Most Current
Organization: VDI
Publication Date: 1 June 2008
Status: active
Page Count: 60
ICS Code (Stationary source emissions): 13.040.40
scope:

This guideline describes the present state of technology in plants for the smelting of aluminium, inclusive of upstream processes for the pre-treatment of metalcontaining feedstock (input material). This guideline also deals with aspects of the further use of by-products, the avoidance/reduction of solid waste and waste water, and the exploitation of waste heat.

The guideline covers smelting plants in which aluminium alloys are produced and employed. What is meant by this is smelting plants as used for primary aluminium production (see VDI 2286 Part 1), smelting plants for secondary aluminium production from aluminium scraps, and smelting plants in so far as they are used in moulding shops for the production of liquid aluminium for downstream casting processes.

Plants for melting aluminum are subject to the requirements of the Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG). The smelting plants described in this guideline are subsumed in the annex to the 4. BImSchV under articles 3.3, 3.4 and 3.8. These plants therefore require an approval procedure referring to BImSchG. Further reference is made to the laws, ordinances, administrative and other regulations (see Bibliography) specifically applicable to the construction and operation of of aluminum smelters (see also VDI 2286 Part 1).
