Purpose and scope of application

The guideline VDI/VDE 2608 applies to tangential composite and radial composite inspections on mating gears with cylindrical gears, bevel gears as well as combinations of worms and worm wheels.

As a special case of the standard tangential composite inspection, the "tangential composite inspection under operating conditions" has proved as a suitable means for rating the running and noise properties of gear sets.

For the methods stated, the principle of measurement, the measuring instruments, the measurement process and the evaluation of the results are described. It is a common feature of all methods that "accumulated deviations" are detected which result from the simultaneous effect of the geometrical errors of the two gears during rolling. The different individual deviations thus act summarily on the result of measurement.

Test results from tangential and radial composite inspections cannot be compared with one another, since the two methods are based on different principles. Although the tangential composite inspection furnishes much more information for the rating of the running properties of gear sets than the radial composite inspection, the latter is often used for economic reasons if its informal content is sufficient for a well-defined purpose.

In the tangential composite test under operating conditions, due to testing in the nominal range of operation of the gear set, information about the actual properties of the gear set under operating conditions is obtained. The results of the tangential composite test under operating conditions can be directly related to other quantities determined under operating conditions such as, for example, contact pattern or noise. The overall behaviour of gears and/or the effectiveness of modifications of the flanks to improve the running properties can thus be practically assessed.
