The series of standards VDI 6022 applies to ventilation and air-conditioning (VAC) systems and air-handling units in all rooms or occupied areas in rooms which are intended for use by persons on more than 30 days per year or more than two hours per day on a regular basis [1].

VDI 6022 Part 7.1 applies to the planning, construction and operation of all ventilation and air-conditioning systems and air-handling units as well as central or decentralised components thereof (including units such as recooling plants), which influence the quality of the supply air in waste treatment plants under waste legislation.

This standard aims to improve the air quality by means of ventilation and air-conditioning systems and air-handling units in waste treatment plants. The standard specifies the requirements to be met in planning, erecting and operating devices and technical systems within the specified scope and describes state-of-the-art measures to be taken in order to ensure the required indoor-air hygiene in occupied areas.

This standard addresses, in particular, architects, building owners, consulting engineers, plant manufacturers, approving and monitoring authorities, experts, operators, maintenance personnel, users and those representing their interests (e.g. staff or workers' councils, employers' liability insurance associations as well as company physicians and public health officers).

The relevant regulations governing the planning, execution, operation and maintenance of ventilation and air-conditioning systems pursuant to VDI 6022 Part 1 are supplemented for permanent workplaces in waste treatment plants by this standard. Such workplaces are mainly found in sorting cabins and control stands. The requirements with respect to air-handling apply to all workplaces.
