Introduction

A wide variety of types of electrical crane drives are in use. The requirements may vary greatly depending on the intended use.

It is the task of the crane manufacturer to select the type of drive most suitable for the specific requirement from both, the economical and technical point of view. Applications range, e.g., from the transhipment crane to the manipulator crane.

In the case of the transhipment crane, it is important that e.g. a ship is unloaded by means of a grab within the shortest possible time. High accelerations and decelerations with corresponding nominal speeds are demanded here.

On the other hand, precise movements with high positioning accuracy are required in the case of a manipulator crane which, e.g., loads a machine tool.

These examples show that both, the task of the crane and its operating environment have to be considered in selecting the suitable drive type.
