This guideline applies to facilities with artificial ice surfaces. The number, kind and size of the ice surfaces can vary and will be determined by the demands of public skating or school and club sports (Table 1). They can be built with and without space for spectators. According to DIN 18 036 "Ice sport facilities; ice sport facilities with artificial ice; rules for planning and construction" they are classified as:
- outdoor rinks (with no protection against weather)
- semi-enclosed rinks (horizontal weather protection)
- enclosed rinks (horizontal and vertical partial protection against the weather)
- indoor rinks (not directly influenced by weather)
It is possible to combine different types of rinks, they can also be technically and functionally combined with other sports and recreational facilities
