This guideline describes the state of the art in terms of that state of development of advanced techniques, equipment or modes of operation which makes the practicality of a measure for occupational health and safety appear certain. In determining the state of the art, particular consideration shall be given to comparable techniques, equipment or modes of operation which have been successfully tested in practical applications. The guideline is applied to explosion protection measures in spraying and drying integrated equipment where, during intended use, combustible dust/air mixtures, vapour/air mixtures or hybrid mixtures occur or may be formed.

By means of examples of risk assessments and protective measures, this guideline gives guidance to both manufacturers and, particularly, operators. The guideline VDI 2263 Part 7 is assumed to be known.
