This guideline applies to installations in process industries such as the chemical and petrochemical industries, especially when they are subject to the German "Störfallverordnung" (Major Accident Regulation). It is based on the harmonized standard DIN EN 61 511 (IEC 61 511). It describes the safety of plants by means of process control engeneering (PCE).

The present guideline gives practical recommendations for engineering, realization and operation of safety instrumented systems (SIS), with special emphasis on the subsystems sensors, actuators and logic systems.

The examples from this guideline are intended to provide a better understanding of VDI/VDE 2180 Part 1 to Part 4 and offer users advice for practical use. All checklists and examples in the Annex are merely of an informative nature and make no claim to completeness.
