This standard reflects the present technical state of art as per the legal definition of BImSchG § 3 [7]. The technical state of art, in the sense of such law, represents the documented, practical efficacy of a measure to limit emissions from progressive processes, installations or operations. In particular, when defining the technical state of art, a comparison has to be made with processes, installations or operations which have been successfully used or with data obtained from most recent tests [3 to 5]. The standard is applicable for explosion protection measures for fluidized bed spray granulators, fluidized bed dryers and fluidized bed coating installations, subsequently be called fluidized bed installations, which may generate flammable dust/air mixtures, vapour/air mixtures or hybrid mixtures when operated as specified.

Exempt from this standard are fluidized bed combustors as per TRD 415.
