The aim of this guideline is to make the selection of materials for the manufacture of large stamping dies and their storage easier.

In any cases of doubt with regard to the best suitable material, the respectively latest standards or, if not available, the steel-iron list should be observed. Apart from recommendations of the manufacturers, these regulations often provide information on further treatment states, additionally guaranteed characteristics, processing options and heat treatments.

Finally, the scope of those regulations already largely determines the specific suitability of steel grades for specific applications.

The use in the columns Properties and Purpose of use has been restricted to individual characteristic cases and attributes. These are the recommendations of the VDI Committee Large Punching Dies.

The guideline does not include any special materials for the dies for hot forming and PM steels that are used for the manufacture of maximum-strength sheet metal parts.
