Objective and scope

During the sequence of a plant engineering project starting with the idea through to the design and detail engineering, erection, operation and disassembly, there is a continuous flow of information about the basic processes in the shape of a continuous or stepwise decomposition or abstraction between a large number of specialist personnel with extremely varied backgrounds in training and experience. This is naturally carried out using a wide variety of descriptive or display formats e.g. with flow diagrams in accordance with DIN 28004. Figure 1 illustrates part of a hitherto heterogenous information flow between engineering tasks along the life cycle of a system.
