VDI 4480 BLATT 4

Throughput of automatic warehouses with multiple-depth storage

active, Most Current
Organization: VDI
Publication Date: 1 July 2002
Status: active
Page Count: 33
ICS Code (Storing. Warehousing): 55.220
scope:

The guideline VDI 4480 Part 4 applies to warehouse types with rack systems in which multiple loading units (transport units) can be stored behind each other in the rack compartments, referred to here also as "warehouse channels", ("multiple-depth" storage). Such warehouses are often referred to as: "channel warehouses", "compact warehouses" or "automatic block warehouses". Multiple-depth storage also includes all flow storage warehouses. Part 4 also applies, in supplementation of the other parts of the guideline VDI 4480, to all other storage systems which allow multiple-depth storage.

The goods are stored in and/or retrieved from the storage locations by automatic operating systems (e.g. storage and retrieval systems, switching carriages, handling systems etc.). Goods can be stored and retrieved with various load take-up devices, such as telescopic forks, channel vehicles (with power supply by cable or wirelessly with battery), lift platforms which can be moved in the channel etc. The units to be stored are either left directly on the rack construction or on system-specific loading aids such as palettes with rollers, trays etc.

The guideline applies both to systems with one or a number of warehouse lanes and for multiple input and output points (EP and AP). The RBS can take up, input, or output one or more loading units at a time, (single or multiple load capacity). There may also be an arrangement of multiple RBS within a warehouse lane.

Purpose of this guideline

The great variety of modern storage systems and technologies makes it very difficult to choose the optimum system for a given task. The throughput is one of the most important characteristic values in this connection. For a comparison between different systems and technologies, however, calls for a standardized analysis method.

For the first time, the series of guidelines VDI 4480 establishes the conditions for this. With the help of these guidelines, the throughput of a storage system can be both calculated mathematically (e.g. in the planning phase) and verified in practice (e.g. during a final inspection procedure). As the framework conditions are precisely defined, a standardised starting point is established. These framework conditions are the same for all types of warehouse, thereby allowing comparability.

The guideline is equally useful for the planner, the manufacturer and the owner/user of a storage system and helps to objectify the evaluation of storage systems.
