scope:
This standard applies to plants for the production of wood-based panels. Wood-based panels include:
- plywood
- veneer panels
- coreboard
- moulded veneer products
- particleboard
- structural particleboard (including specialist products with additives such as flame retardants)
- furniture-grade particleboard (including specialist low-density products or products with additives such as polystyrene), see Figure 1
- OSB (particle board composed of oriented long strands), see Figure 2
- moulded wood particle products
- fibreboard
- wood fibre insulation board
- low, medium and high-density fibreboards (LDF, MDF and HDF boards), see Figure 3)
- moulded wood fibre products
- composite board consisting of different types of wood-based panels
The objective of this standard is to
- describe the production technology for woodbased panels,
- identify emission-relevant operations and sources of waste and waste water generation,
- indicate measures for preventing and reducing emissions to air as well as waste and waste water generation,
- propose achievable emission values reflecting the state of the art, and
- provide emission measurement instructions.
Further processes and operations involved in wood machining and processing (e.g. virgin wood processing, refining of wood and wood-based panels by veneering, foiling and coating, combustion of wood and wood-based panels with and without wood preservatives) are described in VDI 3462 Part 1 and Part 3 to Part 5 of the series of standards VDI 3462. Emission measurement instructions are given in VDI 3462 Part 6.
