scope:

This standard describes the state of the art as per the legal definition in the German Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG) Section 3 Subsection 6 in conjunction with the annex to Section 3 Subsection 6 of the same and the German Ordinance on Hazardous Substances (GefStoffV) Section 3 (10). By this definition, state of the art is the level of development of advanced procedures, equipment or operating methods which reliably indicates the practical suitability of a measure for emission control and for the protection of the health of employees. A determination of the state of the art shall be based on, in particular, comparable procedures, equipment or operating methods which have successfully been tried and tested in practical operation. The standards VDI 2263 Part 8, Part 8.1 and Part 8.2 are applied to explosion protection measures in elevators in which combustible dust/air mixtures are present or likely to occur during specified normal use. Special thought has to be given to hybrid mixtures as no detailed knowledge is presently available in this respect.

This standard gives recommendations to manufacturers and, separately, to operators by describing examples of protective measures for explosion suppression and combinations of structural protective measures in elevators.
