scope:
It is the purpose of this guideline to establish procedures for
- the calculation rules for heat flow rates and diffusion processes, and
- the dimensioning of insulation layer thicknesses upon technical and economic considerations.
The scope of this guideline embraces the thermal and cold protection of technical installations in the industry and in the building services such as pipes, ducts, vessels, appliances and machines, and the insulation of cold stores. In Germany, the insulation layer thicknesses required for heating and hot water supply installations in the building services have been regulated in the "Directive for Energy Saving Heat Protection and Energy-efficient Technical Building Equipment" (Energy Savings Directive - EnEV).1) The considerations put forth in this guideline may lead to other insulation layer thicknesses.
For thermal protection in buildings, EnEV together with DIN 4108 apply.
Regarding the fire behaviour of insulation materials and fire resistance classes of insulation systems, the legal regulations must be observed, e.g., state building codes and building equipment regulations of the federal states.
