Scope of application
The present Part 1 of guideline VDI 3839 provides a general overview of the procedures customarily used to measure, analyse and evaluate vibration in machines of all types. Reference will be made to the measurement and evaluation variables which are relevant to vibration, not only in stationary structures or components but also in rotating shafts. This overview will be supplemented by a general description of the devices and equipment used today to measure these quantities and also their fields of application and limits. In addition a general survey is included of analytical equipment and evaluation procedures commonly used today. Procedures and equipment which are only used with special types of machine will be dealt with in the various other parts of the guideline. The present part concludes with a description of the general criteria for evaluating measurement results during the course of acceptance and monitoring activities.
