Field of application and scope

VDI/VDE Guideline 3511 "Temperature measurement in industry" contains information for expedient Performance of temperature measurements and reveals the main aspects for the assessment of measuring uncertainties. Basic knowledge of temperature measurement is assumed. Descriptions of equipment and circuitry are dealt with only to the extent necessary for understanding the Guideline. Measuring equipment must be selected for the measurements concerned in accordance with the measuring conditions and the error limits required.

In general, a smaller measuring uncertainty is required for acceptance tests than for industrial measurements, in which often greater stress is placed on reliability and rugged construction of the measuring device. In the case of temperature measuring equipment which has been calibrated or tested by an official calibration Station (traceability to statutory temperature scales), it shall be ensured that the values obtained during adjustment or calibration are still applicable when the measuring equipment is used (measuring stability).

Part 2 describes mechanical thermometers with direct indication and thermometers with electrical Output Signal. Only schematic drawings are provided for thermometers with an electrical Output signal; complete measuring circuits are contained in Part 3 "Measured quantity processing". The very important time response of contact thermometers for temperature control systems is dealt with only very briefly. Detailed information in this respect is contained in the Guideline VDI/VDE 3522.
