General
Separate standards or VDI guidelines apply to the testing of individual elements of cleanroom installations; examples are DIN EN ISO 14644-3, DIN EN ISO 14644-1, VDI 2083 Part 1, VDI 2083 Part 8, VDI 2083 Part 12.
The requirements to be met by specialised equipment such as microbiological safety workbenches are specified in DIN EN 12469.
This guideline only considers airborne particles in terms of the determination of their quantities and sizes rather than their further physical, chemical, radiological and biological characteristics.
For specific applications such as for the pharmaceutical, biotechnological, genetic engineering and medical technology fields, the methods described here are associated with the proof of the freedom from germs and other microbiological investigations, see, e.g., the EC GMP Guide. This guideline does not contain a description of microbiological investigations.
