Introduction
This guideline applies to pickled hot-rolled and coldrolled flat products, with and without coating, which are supplied either as wide strips, or as strips obtained by slitting of wide strips and coiled so as to make individually transportable coils with bore in horizontal position. The width-to-height ratio required for safe loading and transport is specified in the guideline VDI 2700 "Safety of loads on vehicles". If the coils are loaded on the vehicle with their rolling direction transverse to the direction of motion of the vehicle, the ratio of coil width to coil diameter shall be at least 0.66, and no less than 0.55, if the rolling direction is the same as the direction of motion of the vehicle. If the width-to-height ratio is lower, special agreements shall be made concerning the packaging of the individual coils, and concerning the design of bound load units. Guidance is given in the guideline VDI 2700.
The surface conditions A and B (according to DIN EN 10130) (formerly surface conditions 03 and 05) and DIN EN 10139 result in different requirements with respect to packaging. See also VDI 2373 "Conservation, packaging and dispatch of metal coils".
It is intended to reduce packaging expenses to the minimum required for transport and storage. Owing to technical characteristics of the load suspension devices, it is presently not generally possible to supply and purchase packaging variant #1 according to this guideline. Where this is required for reasons of safety of transport or of the product, packaging variant #2 shall be used.
