VDI 3877 BLATT 1

Indoor air pollution - Measurement of fibrous dust on settled on surfaces - Sampling and analysis (REM/EDXA)

active, Most Current
Organization: VDI
Publication Date: 1 September 2011
Status: active
Page Count: 36
ICS Code (Air quality in general): 13.040.01
scope:

This guideline specifies a method for the determination of the number of fibrous structures in settled dust on surfaces and their classification into specific substance groups (e.g. chrysotile, amphibole asbestos, other inorganic fibres). The method is usually applied in indoor environments, but it is also suitable for certain outdoor applications (e.g. window-sills).

Guidance on the differentiation of product fibres and on the determination of organic fibres is given. The assessment of the results is based on a semi-quantitative evaluation method.

Under the standard conditions specified in this guideline the detection limit of the method is approx. 40 fibrous structures per cm2 of surface area.

It is not permissible to assess the indoor air quality by means of tape sample analyses.

The method is not suitable for the determination of the asbestos content of bulk materials.
