Object and Scope
The Guideline VDE/VDI 3511 "Temperature Measurement in Industry" contains Instructions of efficient temperature measurement along with the essential aspects relating to the assessment of measuring uncertainties. A basic knowledge of temperature measurement is assumed. Descriptions of equipment and circuitry are therefore dealt with only to the extent necessary for understanding the Guideline. Measuring equipment shall be selected for the measurements concerned according to the measuring conditions and error limits required.
In general, a smaller measurement uncertainty will be required for acceptance tests than for industrial measurements, where stress is often placed on a reliable and solidly installed measuring de vice. Temperature measuring devices are also often used which have been calibrated or tested by an official calibration authority or test house (traceability to legal temperature scales). When using such devices it has to be ensured that the values obtained during calibration or inspection still apply (measuring stability).
This Part 5 contains Instructions on the installation of thermometers, the field of application coverning the normal temperature measuring devices for chemical, metallurgical, power and other process control plant.
Recognised measuring arrangements are dealt with particularly thoroughly, with the installation of contact thermometers and radiation thermometers described in particular detail.
Measurement of the temperatures and appropriate methods are described in Parts 1 to 4 of this Guideline.
