This guideline is designed to assist manufacturers, suppliers and users by providing information and explanations for working with multigas sensors correctly and safely.

It defines the terminology, describes the construction of multigas sensors, classifies multigas sensors, establishes minimum requirements for them and specifies parameters and quality classes for the evaluation of multigas sensors. The objective is to explain the most important terms and definitions in this field and offer guidance for the use of multigas sensors.

Later parts of the series of guidelines VDI/ VDE 3518 will cover the testing of multigas sensors, special applications, determining odours with electronic noses and notes on the proper handling of multigas sensors.
