VDI 3894 BLATT 1

Emissions and immissions from animal husbandry - Housing systems and emissions - Pigs, cattle, poultry, horses

active, Most Current
Organization: VDI
Publication Date: 1 September 2011
Status: active
Page Count: 84
ICS Code (Stationary source emissions): 13.040.40
ICS Code (Animal husbandry and breeding): 65.020.30
scope:

This guideline applies to facilities for the housing of pigs, cattle, poultry, and horses. The following sources of emissions are considered:

  • housing facilities for animals
  • adjacent facilities for the storage and treatment of solid and liquid manure as well as poultry dung and facilities for the storage and processing of certain feedstuff (in particular silage)
  • areas outside of animal housing facilities where the animals can move freely (paddocks, cattle yards)

The guideline does not apply to the free-range husbandry of animals. It describes the current state of the art of techniques, equipment, and modes of operation in animal housing factilities as well as the emissions caused by them (odorants, ammonia, dust, methane, and dinitrogen monoxide). In addition, it shows how these emissions can be avoided and reduced.

The spreading of solid and liquid manure on agricultural areas is not covered by this guideline because they are not considered facilities as defined in § 3 (5) No. 3 BImSchG (Federal Immission Control Act).

Guideline VDI 3894 Part 2 will describe a specific distance regulation for odorant immissions, which allows the immission situation to be evaluated and guarantees protection against harmful environmental impacts caused by odours.
