Introduction

The aim of this guideline is to lay the foundation for benchmarking in procurement logistics by defining indicators (characteristic values). The indicators can be used to measure the efficiency of the logistics of piece goods procurement in any sector. As well as being used within the framework of benchmarking studies, the indicators can also be used for internal controlling purposes.

Benchmarking is the continuous, systematic comparison of one's own company with other companies in order to improve the performance of one's own organisation. An essential part of benchmarking is measuring the efficiency of the observed processes with the aid of indicators. The validity of the indicators depends particularly on the companies being compared having a uniform method for collection of the data. The clear definition of the indicators in this guideline creates the preconditions necessary for standardised data collection.

This guideline is part of the framework guideline VDI 4400. As well as the logistic indicators for procurement, this also contains guidelines for the areas of production and distribution.

Section 2 first deals with the definition of procurement. Then the indicators structuring system is introduced. Section 4 explains the structure of the definition sheets and the main aspects of the collection of indicator data before Section 5, 6 and 7 deal with the individual definition sheets for the indicators.
