Biomimetics - Biomimetic robots

active, Most Current
Organization: VDI
Publication Date: 1 November 2013
Status: active
Page Count: 30
ICS Code (Industrial robots. Manipulators): 25.040.30
ICS Code (Biology. Botany. Zoology): 07.080
ICS Code (Application of information technology in general): 35.240.01
scope:

This standard provides scientists and engineers a guide to the biomimetic approach as an additional method for solving problems when developing robots.

Classic robotics differentiates between mobile and stationary robots. However, this standard does not make this differentiation because animals, being "mobile" living organisms, generally serve as models. Biological manipulators (the hands and arms of primates, for example) are always multifunctional and are used for locomotion as well as to manipulate objects.

In particular, this standard presents the strengths of biomimetic robotics and some of its limitations.

Humanoid/anthropomorphic robots are not handled in this standard since there is no consensus on the definitions relating to this area of biomimetic robotics. However, the principles illustrated in the standard can also be applied to the development of these types of systems.
