Introduction
The guideline VDI 3798 Part 3 is based on Part 1 of this Guideline [1]. Part 3 comprises Instructions on the graphic documentation during the inventory phase.
During the survey of the object, the different individual types of documentation - such as for example on historical building methods, materials - and the damage inventory are illustrated in graphic form to provide a handy overview.
The intention is to collect information for recording the damage status and condition of the object so that more precise statements can be given, for example on the background of the building, the cause of the dam¬ age and its development. This will allow investigation concepts to be defined, leading ultimately to the elaboration of a suitable conservation concept for historic monuments. Moreover, the investigation program can be limited on the basis of the preceding inventory phase to the essential investigations, and interference with the substance of the building can thus be reduced to a minimum. In addition, the repair and maintenance concept and the action taken should be documented in order to be able to evaluate changes to the object.
Mapping may include all the data and information on the historic monument or building which can be plotted by graphic means in plans, such as for example constmction phases, history of the building, materials and methods used or setting sequences.
A unifonn structure of the index will enable the various documentation topics to be represented systematically. It will also provide the means to compare inventories carried out by different examiners [2].
This Part 3 of the Guideline describes an open-ended system, i.e. additional mapping features may be added to the systematic structure and index when necessary.
