As a Supplement to the guideline VDI 3641 "Mobile Datenübertragungssysteme im innerbetrieblichen Transport" (Mobile data transmission systems in inhouse transport) this guideline provides practical Information and checklists for the use of mobile data terminals in logistic and material flow applications.

The use of mobile data terminals for supraregional applications will be dealt with in a different VDI guideline.

The realisation of systems with integrated mobile data terminals is also dealt with in the guideline VDI 3962 "Praxisgerechter DV-Einsatz im automatischen Lager" (Practice-oriented IT application in auto¬ mated storage systems). Identification systems (ID systems) are explained in the guideline VDI 4416 "Betriebsdatenerfassung und Identifikation - Identi fikationssysteme" (Production data acquisition and Identification - Identification systems).

The requirements of the logistic system and of the material flow such as

demand careful examination and analysis on the part of planners, owners and manufacturers for the application of mobile data terminals.

This guideline is aimed at providing a decision-making aid for the selection of systems with mobile data terminals.
