The first issue of the guideline VDI 2358 appeared in 1968. It attracted a lot of attention and interest within the country and abroad, since it represented the state of the art in the field of wire rope research and application in condensed form and provided the person handling this subject in practice with valuable information about selection, use, maintenance and monitoring of wire ropes.

The second issue appeared in 1984. It contained a few technical amendments important for practical handling of wire ropes. The new standards that had appeared meanwhile were also incorporated and notes on technical safety regulations were dealt with in greater detail. The system of units was converted to SI units for the purpose of standardisation.

The third issue now available contains additional innovations important for practical application. The elaborate knowledge about the fatigue behaviour of wire ropes is dealt with extensively. As far as possible, reference is made to European standards while citing standards.

The guideline is not a regulation and also cannot replace established standards in the field of wire ropes. The issue primarily attempts to delve deeper into the understanding of the element "wire rope", which is not always clear.
