This test method determines the relative effectiveness of wood preservatives in small wood specimens exposed to a natural marine environment. The Use Category that the results pertain to will depend on the location of the test site around the coast. See Figures 1 and 2 of Standard U1, Commodity Specification G: Marine Applications. Preservatives that perform well at a test site within one marine Use Category can also be expected to perform well in the more northerly Use Categories, but testing within those Use Categories may demonstrate that lower retentions will provide acceptable performance. It is not within the scope of this procedure to determine the retention levels necessary for protection of commercial size piles and timbers. This test method is intended to be a screening test. It may also be used to provide information for standardization of protection treatments.
