1.1 Project Scope

This report summarizes the findings and recommendations from a four year research study aimed at updating the American Petroleum Institute (AFT) Specification 14A Verification Test Procedures for surface-controlled subsurface safety valves (SCSSVs) and subsurface-controlled subsurface safety valves (SSCSVs). This work was funded by the American Petroleum Institute. Specification 14A was formulated in 1973 to provide a meaningful specification for subsurface safety valve equipment. The specification is periodically updated to remain current with the latest safety valve design innovations and the increasing severity of the down-hole environment in which the safety equipment must function.
