This Defence Standard in conjunction with the document referred to herein, specifies the general requirements for propulsion and generating lubricating oil systems in HM Surface Ships and HM Submarines. Main transmission lubricating oil systems comprise:
a) HM Surface Ships:
1) Forced lubrication supplies to and returns from main gearboxes, fluid couplings, thrust blocks, whether integral or external to main gearboxes, power turbines of gas turbines, when these are not supplied from the Gas Turbine change unit Lubrication Oil System, and Prime Mover Primary Gearboxes;
2) The filling, storage, transfer and lubricating oil renovating systems for the oil used in the propulsion lubricating oil system and generating systems.
b) HM Submarines:
1) Forced lubrication supplies to and returns from main gearboxes, thrust blocks, steam turbines and steam turbine alternators, including governor supplies. The system may also include supplies to and returns from the propulsion motor and other minor consumers in some installations;
2) The filling, storage, transfer and lubricating oil renovating systems for the oil used in the submarine propulsion lubricating oil system and generating systems.
This Defence Standard is primarily directed at the HM Surface Ship and HM Submarine Designer/Builder, but it includes requirements which are applicable to the lubrication oil arrangements on equipment which the system supplies. Certain equipment Standards, e.g. Def Stan 02-305, include requirements which either appear, or cross refer as appropriate to requirements, in this Standard.
The requirements relating to lubricating oil drain tanks apply equally to a drain tank which is integral with the main gearbox.
