Scope and application

The EEDI framework ist set out in Chapter 4, "Regulations on Energy Efficiency on Ships" in MARPOL Annex VI; Resolution MEPC.203(62). The verified EEDI confirms a ship's design energy efficiency comprising verification of the design CO2 emissions, capacity and corresponding reference speed according to IMO Resolution MEPC.212(63), Resolution MEPC.214(63), Resolution MEPC.224 (64), Resolution MEPC.23(65) and Resolution MEPC.233(65).

These Guidelines apply to ships as defined in Regulation 2.23 and Regulation 20 of MARPOL Annex VI of 400 GT and above:

•bulk carriers,

•tankers,

•gas carriers,

•LNG carriers,

•container ships,

•general cargo ships,

•refrigerated cargo ships,

•combination carriers,

•Ro-Ro cargo ships (vehicle carriers),

•Ro-Ro cargo and Ro-Ro passenger ships, and

•cruise passenger ships with non-conventional propulsion1.

1 "Non-conventional propulsion" means a method of propulsion, other than conventional propulsion, including diesel-electric propulsion, turbine propulsion, and hybrid propulsion systems
