Scope of Application

1. These Guidelines apply to the use of fuel-cell systems (FC systems) permanently installed on ships and boats. They describe the technical requirements for the safe operation of FC systems. 2. In the case of FC systems which are used as the sole means of propulsion, for the emergency electrical supply or for the supply of essential consumers in accordance with the GL Construction Rules, the additional requirements will be determined within the scope of an individual examination.

3. Designs which deviate from these Guidelines or from the applicable Rules may be approved if they are examined by GL for suitability and then approved as being equivalent.

4. Deviating designs are necessary to some extent for submersibles. These can be approved by GL, especially with regard to the ventilation systems and pressure relief devices.

5. For water craft with FC systems conforming to these Guidelines and having a rated output greater than or equal to 10 % of the rated output of the machinery installation the class notation FC-xxx will be assigned. The wild-card symbol "xxx" designates the percentage share of the FC system in relation to the rated output of the machinery installation. For FC systems having a rated output lower than 10 % of the rated output of the machinery installation the class notation with FC will be assigned.
