scope:
This is the second and last part of the international standard titled Guidelines on Technical Definitions and Criteria for Natural & Organic Cosmetic Ingredients and Products, ISO 16128. This part, ISO 16128:2 (Part 2), builds on and enhances ISO 16128:1 Definitions for Ingredients (Part 1). Part 2 is intended to be used in conjunction with Part 1. Part 2 provides technical guidance to characterize natural and organic ingredients and products starting from the ingredient category definitions in Part 1. Part 2 describes approaches to determine indices that apply to the ingredient categories defined in Part 1. The document also offers a framework to determine the natural or organic content of products based on the ingredient characterization. Neither Part 1 nor Part 2 addresses product communication (e.g. claims and labelling), human safety, environmental safety and socio-economical considerations (e.g. fair trade), the characteristics of packaging materials or regulatory requirements applicable for cosmetics.
